Vote by mail update: VBM ballots continue to trickle in Monday

New Jersey elections officials counted 28,690 mail-in ballots Monday, inching the state’s advance vote count to 1,964,710, according to an analysis by Associated Press elections researcher Ryan Dubicki.

In-person early voting, which has accounted for the majority of advance voting, ended Sunday. VBMs are accepted until next Monday, as long as they are postmarked by Election Day.

Monday’s relatively small output means not much has changed since our last update; Democrats account for 44.6% of the advance vote, Republicans 28.6%, and unaffiliated voters 26.2%.

New Jerseyans have now submitted 791,868 absentee ballots. The majority of mail-in ballots, 57.9%, belong to Democrats. Republicans are responsible for 20.3% of absentee ballots, and unaffiliated voters account for 21.4% of absentee votes.

About 71.1% of mail-in ballots have been returned; about 320,000 absentee ballots remain outstanding.

In-person early voting spiked this year: 1,172,842 people voted over nine days of early voting, including 418,544 Democrats and 400,792 Republicans.

Democrats maintain a nearly 5,000 advance vote advantage in the competitive 7th congressional district.

In the 7th district, 84,177 Democrats have voted, 79,516 Republicans have voted, and 58,107 unaffiliated residents have voted. About 75% of absentee ballots have been returned in the 7th district.

223,074 residents of the 7th district have voted by mail or in early voting, more than any other district.
