New Jersey added nearly 10,000 new voters to its rolls in April, going from 6,539,389 voters to 6,549,568, according to data released today by the New Jersey Division of Elections; Democrats, Republicans, and unaffiliated voters all made gains over the course of the month.
That’s welcome but not surprising news for Republicans, who have steadily gained ground on the voter rolls since Joe Biden became president, breaking the Democratic Party’s 1 million-voter advantage last April. The state currently has 1,559,327 Republicans (23.8% of the electorate), up from 1,555,823 a month earlier.
The fact that Democrats also gained ground, though, is notable; the party has spent much for the last several years treading water or actively losing voters even as the state’s electorate expanded. The number of Democrats grew from 2,492,598 to 2,494,013 (38.1% of the electorate) over the month of April.
Unaffiliated voters, meanwhile, are now at 2,416,960 (36.9% of the electorate), an increase of more than 5,000 from last month’s 2,411,762.
A small number of New Jersey voters – 79,268 voters, or 1.2% of the electorate – are registered with one of seven minor parties, none of which have much heft in state politics and some of which are not even active organizations anymore.
The largest of these is the Libertarian Party, which has 25,118 New Jersey registrants. The Conservative Party has 14,649, the Constitution Party has 13,041, the Green Party has 11,460, and the Socialist Party has 7,845; the Natural Law and Reform Parties, both of which have been defunct for decades, have 5,586 and 1,569 registrants, respectively.
