Mildred Scott is the first Black woman to win election as a Sheriff in New Jersey.  She was elected in 2010.

Scott is a career law enforcement official.  She was among the first women to graduate from the Middlesex County Police Academy and worked her way up the ranks in the county Sheriff’s Department.

She was elected to the Middlesex County Board of freeholders in 2008 after incumbent Camille Fernicola declined to seek re-election.  She won that race by over 60,000 votes.

After Joseph Spicuzzo retired in 2010, Scott became the Democratic nominee for Sherriff.

She defeated Republican Keith Hackett by 12,252 votes, 54%-46%.

Scott was re-elected in 2013, 2016 and 2019.

In 2017, published reports listed Scott as a potential candidate for Lt. Governor on a ticket with Democrat Phil Murphy.
