Theresa Hilton, the director of the Division of Criminal Justice in the New Jersey Attorney General’s office, will depart state government to take a job in the private sector.

The New Jersey Globe reported on Thursday that Attorney General Jennifer Davenport had named Martha Nye, the first assistant attorney general, to serve as interim director.

As part of a major restructuring of the office, Davenport is closing the embattled Office of Public Integrity and Accountability and returning responsibility for prosecuting public corruption to the Division of Criminal Justice.  All of OPIA’s bureaus — Corruption, Integrity, Conviction Review, and Special Investigations — will become part of the Division of Criminal Justice

Rebecca Schuman, a former federal prosecutor hired in June to lead OPIA’s anti-corruption efforts, will remain in charge of the Corruption Bureau when it moves to the Division of Criminal Justice.

A Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, Hilton joined the DCJ in the fall of 2022 after seven years as an assistant Union County Prosecutor.  She served as acting prosecutor for four months in 2024.
