The Regular Democratic Organization of Union County has dropped out of a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the county organization line. For those who don’t know the distinction, the RDO and the Union County Democratic Committee are legally separate entities; the RDO has its own bylaws and rules to award the line. Senate President Nicholas Scutari chairs both.

In big news for the Star-Ledger, former Real Housewives of New Jersey reality TV star Thomas Manzo was sentenced to 84 months in prison for hiring and then helping a Lucchese crime family soldier to assault his former wife’s current husband. Manzo paid the “made man with his own crew” by picking up the tab for a free wedding reception at the Brownstone, the Paterson catering hall he partly owns. “Whether you’re actually in the Mafia or not, hiring the mob to assault someone because of your marital problems is abhorrent,” said U.S. Attorney Philip Sellinger said. “Covering up the role you played only makes it worse. The jury’s verdict, and today’s sentence make clear that this office will spare no resources to hold accountable anyone who commits such crimes.” U.S. District Court Judge Susan Wigenton immediately remanded Manzo and also sentenced him to an addition three years of supervised release.

The New Jersey Farmland Preservation Program is creating a new “Next Generation Farmer Program” to help farmers start new farming enterprises. “Developing next-generation farmers is critical to the long-term viability of the agricultural industry in New Jersey,” said New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Ed Wengryn. “We want input from the agricultural community to guide our focus as we identify how the SADC can help new farmers overcome obstacles, including access to land and equipment, gaining hands-on experience, and learning how to run a successful farm business.”
