A New Jersey nurse who worked in the oncology unit at Bayonne Medical Center was critically injured after a street mugging in Time Square on Friday and died the following day.

Maria Ambrocio was taken off life support on Saturday.  An alleged mugger being chased after stealing someone’s cell phone allegedly barreled into her and Ambrocio cracked her skull on the pavement after falling.

She was a member of Health Professionals and Allied Employees Local 5185.

“Ambrocio was an active HPAE member for 21 years and was well known in the hospital and in the Bayonne community. She is remembered as a loving, kind-hearted nurse who gave her all for her patients,” said HPAE President Debbie White and Local 5185 President John Bauer.  “We are left with a hole in our hearts this morning as we try to come to terms with her untimely death.”

Jermaine Foster, a 26-year-old homeless man, fled the scene but was later arrested, police said.
