Former President Donald Trump is expected to announce his bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination tonight and he’ll do so with the support of Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis).

“I’m a loyal guy.  He did a great job,” Van Drew told the New Jersey Globe.  “I want to have a president who will do something about inflation, about crime, and support the police.”

Van Drew and Trump became allies in 2019 when the freshman South Jersey congressman, then a Democrat, refused to vote to impeach the president.   He switched parties in December 2019; Trump welcomed Van Drew during a meeting in the Oval Office, and in January 2020 went to a rally in Wildwood to endorse Van Drew for re-election as a Republican.

“If you look at where we were  two years ago and where we are now, he was the one individual who was able to crack that rotten egg open in Washington, D.C., “ Van Drew said.  “It’s important that we don’t go down the same path with this president (Biden).  He’s been awful.”

At a fundraiser for Van Drew in August, Trump touted Van Drew as a possible running mate in 2024; Van Drew has not dismissed the idea of running for vice president, but said he is focused on the U.S. House of Representatives.

Van Drew won a massive 20-point landslide in last week’s election and leads Democrat Tim Alexander by more than 45,000 votes in his bid for a third term.  He has won the last two GOP primaries with over 80% and held his seat in 2020 by a 52%-46% margin against Democrat Amy Kennedy, a member of one of the nation’s most prominent political families.
