Two weeks ago, Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) became the most prominent New Jersey politician to call on President Joe Biden to exit the race for president. And now that Biden has done so, Sherrill says she’s all aboard with Vice President Kamala Harris.
“I wholeheartedly endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for President of the United States,” Sherrill said in a statement to the New Jersey Globe. “She has broken barriers while improving public safety, protecting abortion rights, and standing up for our democracy. Vice President Harris understands what is at stake in this election, and as a former prosecutor, is uniquely qualified to prosecute the case against Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, and their extremist Project 2025.”
Sherrill, a three-term congresswoman and a potential candidate for governor of New Jersey in 2025, had said on July 9 that while she was highly supportive of the Biden administration’s accomplishments, she believed that the 81-year-old president was not the right person to take on Donald Trump in November. Biden apparently came to the same conclusion today, announcing that he would step aside and endorse Harris as his successor.
Two other New Jersey members of Congress, Reps. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) and Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Ewing), have also endorsed Harris, who for now has the Democratic field to herself. It’s not exactly clear yet whether Harris will draw any notable opposition prior to the Democratic National Convention in August, or how the process will play out if she does.
Regardless, Sherrill said that she has confidence in Harris to defeat Trump and keep the White House in Democratic hands.
“This election is about the future, and the country we are leaving to the next generation of Americans,” she said. “For my children, and every child in New Jersey, I will work each and every day from now until Tuesday, November 5th, to make sure that Kamala Harris is elected the 47th President of the United States of America.”
