New Jersey electors cast 14 votes for Harris, Walz

New Jersey’s 14 presidential electors cast their votes for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz on Tuesday in the ceremonial conclusion to New Jersey’s election year.

November’s election didn’t go the way of the Democrats, who have spurned the victory of President-elect Donald Trump. Still, leaders of Tuesday’s ceremony praised their commitment to the orderly transfer of power.

“I think perhaps one of the greatest gifts that the United States has given the world is the notion of the free transfer of power,” Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin said at the ceremony. “I honestly may sound a little corny, but I get goosebumps when the most powerful person in the world gets in the vehicle with his successor and goes to the Capitol and transfers the power.”

Electoral colleges are meeting throughout the country Tuesday.

The body elected Passaic County Democratic Chair and former State Democratic Chair John Currie as president of the New Jersey Electoral College.

Gov. Phil Murphy, First Lady Tammy Murphy, and Democratic State Chairman LeRoy Jones Jr. delivered remarks about an hour before the electoral ceremony. New Jersey Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner swore in the electors in the State House Annex — the group met on the Assembly floor four years ago. 

Harris and Walz received all 14 votes for president and vice president. New Jersey has never had a faithless elector.

Former New Jersey Democratic State Committee Executive Director Saily Avelenda; Warren County Democratic Chair Charles Boddy; Monmouth County Democratic Chair Dyese Davis; former Murphy administration Chief Counsel Parimal Garg; Trenton Councilwoman Yazminelly Gonzalez; Jersey City attorney and educational advocate Robyn Grodner; Jacqueline Jones; Franklin Mayor Phillip Kramer; New Jersey Democratic State Committee COO Marget Martin; retired public servant David Matos Jr.; New Jersey State Democratic Committee member Ian Mosley; Assemblywoman Ellen Park; and Middlesex County Sheriff Mildred Scott served as the electors.
