N.J. Dem convention delegates vote to endorse Harris

Bob Menendez not invited

Kamala Harris has won the endorsement of the New Jersey delegation to the Democratic National Convention after a meeting on Monday evening.

None of the Biden delegates spoke up in opposition to Harris, the New Jersey Globe has confirmed.

Democratic State Chairman LeRoy Jones called the meeting last night, hours after Joe Biden announced that he would not seek re-election and was endorsing Harris for the nomination.

Gov. Phil Murphy and U.S. Senator Cory Booker asked the delegation to endorse Harris, as did seven members of the state’s House delegation: Frank Pallone, Donald Norcross, Bonnie Watson Coleman, Josh Gottheimer, Andy Kim,  Mikie Sherrill, and Rob Menendez.  All nine have endorsed Harris.

“During the call tonight it was made abundantly clear that New Jersey Democrats want to see Vice President Kamala Harris become our Presidential nominee and Party standard-bearer in this upcoming fight for our country’s future,” Jones said.  “Among the New Jersey Democratic Party’s many core strengths is our ability to always come together as a family and arrive at a position of unity towards common goals.”

New Jersey has 126 delegates and 19 super delegates.

Two delegates elected on June 4, a primary on a pro-Palestine uncommitted slate, were invited to the meeting; both remain uncommitted.

One super delegate, U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, who was convicted last week on federal corruption charges, was not extended an invitation.

Jones said the fall campaign “will be the most critical fight we have undertaken because it will truly impact generations to come.”

“A Trump win in November would ensure women are denied the right to make their own healthcare decisions, roll back critical environmental protections, decimate our education system, and expand the executive powers of an individual who has already repeatedly praised dictators and expressed his desire to follow in their footsteps,” said Jones.  “Allowing Donald Trump a second term potentially provides him the opportunity to even further damage our judicial system and expand his totalitarian ideological reach into our Supreme Court.”
