If former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie can pick up just two points in national polls, he could hit 5% in his bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
A national Quinnipiac University Poll released today shows Donald Trump with 67% of the vote among Republicans and GOP leaners, with Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis tied for second with 11% each. Vivek Ramaswamy is at 4%, followed by Christie at 3%.
“DeSantis continues his yearlong slide. Haley gains momentum,” said Quinnipiac University polling analyst Tim Malloy. “The battle for second place heats up, but it’s unlikely it will send a holiday chill through MAGA world.”
Christie doesn’t register among very conservative voters, but he’s at 7% among moderate and liberal Republicans.
His standing is validated by a New York Times/Siena Poll from today that also places Christie at 3%. That poll has Trump leading Haley, 64%-11%, with DeSantis at 9% and Ramaswamy at 5%.
An Emerson College Poll released today of likely Iowa caucusgoers puts Christie at 4%, trailing Trump (50%), Haley (17%), DeSantis (9%), and Ramaswamy (8%).
“Among registered Republicans, Trump leads with 52%, compared to 16% for Haley and 14% for DeSantis – independents show a closer contest, with Trump at 43%, Haley at 25%, and DeSantis at 15%,” said Spencer Kimball, the poll director. “These numbers suggest that Trump will perform better in closed primary states where only registered Republicans can vote.”
The Quinnipiac Poll has President Joe Biden’s job approvals at an upside-down 38%-58%.
