Michael Roman, a former Trump campaign operative who allegedly delivered lists of fake electors to the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, did work on Chris Christie’s 2013 re-election campaign and now heads the political operation of freshman Assemblywoman Beth Sawyer (R-Woolwich), the New Jersey Globe has confirmed.
POLITICO first reported on Friday that Roman, who ran Election Day operations for Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign, was the one who delivered false elector certificates to the chief of staff to a Pennsylvania congressman, Rep. Mike Kelly, in an attempt to get them to Vice President Mike Pence. It was Kelly’s staff that delivered the list to the office of U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin).
Records show that Christie for Governor paid Roman’s firm, MR&A, $2,000 as a consultant for “computers, accounting, etc.” one week after Christie was re-elected to a second term.
He became acquainted with two top Christie advisors, Michael DuHaime and Bill Stepien, while working as director of Election Day Operations at the Republican National Committee in 2006. DuHaime was the RNC political director and Stepien was the nation 72 hour director for the RNC that cycle.
After DuHaime became campaign manager for Rudy Giuliani’s presidential bid in 2007, Roman was hired as a regional political director. Stepien was the national field director of that campaign.
Roman had worked in the White House as a special assistant to the President and director of special projects and research from 2017 to 2019. He handled ballot integrity issues for the Trump campaign in 2016, and ran the research operation for Freedom Partners, a group headed by the Koch brothers.
The Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol has subpoenaed Roman, POLITICO reported.
Earlier this year, he began working for Sawyer, a South Jersey legislator who was part of the 3rd legislative district GOP slate, along with State Sen. Edward Durr (R-Swedesboro) and Assemblywoman Bethanne McCarthy Patrick (R-Mannington). They ousted Senate President Steve Sweeney and Democratic Assemblymen John Burzichelli (D-Paulsboro) and Adam Taliaferro (D-Woolwich).
On March 28, Roman was a guest speaker at a Sawyer fundraiser in Penns Grove, along with former gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli and State Sen. Michael Testa (R-Vineland).
Roman is now helping Sawyer. Records filed with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission show that she paid Roman $2,500 for political consulting in April 2022,
Republicans who know Roman describe him as “good guy,” and a dedicated father of eight.
Sawyer declined to comment.
