Update: A charge against Dustin Racioppi was dismissed in municipal court on March 19. He admitted to violating a local noise ordinance).
Dustin Racioppi, the New Jersey editor for POLITICO, was arrested on an assault charge earlier this year after police responded to a call related to a domestic violence complaint.
Racioppi has entered a not guilty plea and will appear in court on Tuesday.
Records show that Racioppi was arrested on Saturday afternoon, January 13 in Ocean Township, Monmouth County.
He faces a single charge of simple assault and purposely or knowingly causing bodily injury. Details from the police report are withheld because it involves an issue of domestic violence. The New Jersey Globe is withholding the name of the alleged victim.
Racioppi faces up to six months in jail and a fine of $1,000.
POLITICO has not reported or disclosed the arrest.
A former Gannett political editor, he wrote a series of stories about domestic violence a decade ago as an Asbury Park Press reporter.
“Domestic violence is not as easy to recognize as a punch in the face — and even then, it isn’t always so apparent,” Racioppi wrote in a 2014 lead.
Racioppi declined to comment.
Charges are merely allegations and defendants are presumed innocent.
