Jennifer Williams was the Trenton Republican municipal chair two years ago when she launched a bid for a seat on the state’s most dysfunctional governing body.
Williams was elected to the city council by just one vote in a runoff to represent Trenton’s North War seat.
Now she’s seeking re-election under a new system approved by voters that staggered city council terms; until 2022, all seven seats were up at the same time. Now the three at-large seats and the four ward seats are run two years apart. The ward seats are up for two-year terms this year.
Mayor Reed Gusciora won a second term with a massive 71% — two of the most controversial councilmembers ran for mayor and got pummeled – and voters appeared to hit the reset button with six of the seven members elected for the first time.
Gusciora has endorsed Williams and attended her campaign kickoff; so did five of her council colleagues.
“We have a good team on City Council, and I hope for our city that the band stays together in the coming years. We may not always agree on every point or issue, but we are professional and have what is best for our city in our hearts,” Williams said.
The filing deadline for non-partisan municipal election candidates is August 22.
