Md Forid Uddin has won an at-large seat on the Paterson City Council after a final tally of provisional and late-arriving vote-by-mail ballots on Wednesday.

Uddin, a high school teacher, defeated barber shop owner Casey Melvin by 638 votes, 4,101 to 3,463 to capture the third seat in the May 10 non-partisan municipal election.  Last week, Uddin’s lead over Melvin was just 131 votes.

Two incumbents, Dr. Lilisa Mimms (5,303) and Maritza Davila (4,784) were also re-elected.  Uddin will succeed  Flavio Rivera, who took a job with the Passaic County Board of Social Services, last year and did not seek re-election to a second term.

Educator Gilman Choudhury finished fifth with 3,191 votes, slightly ahead of Mark Fischer, a planning board member and general manager of the Silk City Sharks minor league football team, received 3,155 votes.

Four other candidates finished further back: Mitch Santiago (2,465); Jeyss Abreu (2,302), Gilman Choudhury (3,191); Melissa Baralt (2,819); and Sonia Deliz (2,538).

The final results in the mayoral race gave incumbent Andre Sayegh (7,835) a 3,438-vote margin, 48%-27%, victor over Councilman Alex Mendez (4,397).  Trailing further behind were Councilman Michael Jackson (1,611), former Councilman Aslon Goow (1,581) and Councilman Luis Velez (700).

Menendez and Jackson, who combined for 37% of the vote, are currently under indictment on election fraud charges and are awaiting trial.

In Ocean City, Pete Madden held his at-large city council seat by 43 votes against Tom Rotondi, a ward councilman.  Karen Bergman was the top vote-getter in her re-election bid, and former boardwalk pizzeria owner John A. “Tony P” Polcini won the second seat.
