Some of New Jersey’s most prominent public officials today paid tribute to Brian P. Stack, who set the record as the longest-serving mayor of Union City. He took office as mayor, his dream job, on October 24, 2000. With 23 years and 91 days as mayor, Stack passes Harry J. Thourot, who held the post from 1939 to 1962.
U.S. Senator Cory Booker
“If New Jersey mayors were polled on who offers the best constituent services, Mayor Stack would win. He is a mayor’s mayor—a tireless advocate for his city who shows up and gets things done. No one works harder for their community. His work ethic and commitment to public service continue to inspire me, even after 24 years.”
Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin
“Mayor Brian Stack’s dedication to his job and his commitment to the people of Union City is unparalleled. He is devoted to his city 24/7, 365 days a year. His constituent affairs efforts are legendary -from his sheer accessibility to his annual turkey giveaway. His vision for the city, coupled with is ability to get things done, has earned him the respect of voters and fellow electeds well beyond the city’s borders. It’s easy to see why the city’s residents want Mayor Stack to lead their community year after year.”
Hudson County Executive Craig Guy
“Hardest-working mayor in the country. His passion for providing opportunities and services is unprecedented. I’m excited about working with Brian in my role as county executive.”
State Senator Raj Mukherji
“I served alongside Brian Stack for a decade. He walks all over town and calls in gum on the sidewalk, landlord-tenant violations, and quality of life complaints. He gave zero F’s how much I ever raised for his committee… it’s how hard are you working? How many doors have you knocked on? Give me a quantitative analysis on the constituents you’ve helped out of a jam? He is an extraterrestrial sort of public servant I’ve never seen elsewhere, but aspire to become.”
Governor Phil Murphy
“Brian Stack is an outstanding mayor and has served Union City with unparalleled dedication and integrity throughout his career. From the open-door policy, he maintains for his constituents to ensure that every family in his city has a turkey on their table come Thanksgiving, he has been completely devoted to bettering the lives of Union City residents for 24 years. I congratulate him on reaching this milestone and look forward to continuing to advance our shared mission of building a stronger and fairer New Jersey for every family.”
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Chairman Kevin O’Toole
“In all my years of public service, I’ve never met anyone who has worked harder or cared more for their constituents than Brian Stack. He dedicates himself every day to the men and women he represents, and there is no better role model for any elected official in the state of New Jersey. It’s no surprise that the voters continue to place their confidence in Brian and have made him the longest-serving mayor in Union City history. To my friend of over 20 years, congratulations!”
Senate President Nicholas Scutari
“With Brian Stack, the mold was not just broken; it was shattered. He is the epitome of a public servant, Second only to his work ethic and sacrifice, of non-stop 24 hours a day seven days a week constituent relations, is his pure love for his city and its citizens. He commands a group of Core supporters larger than most counties and more disciplined. He has maintained his decency in the rough and tumble world of Hudson County politics. But most important for me, is our friendship, as the Senate Judiciary chairman we are close, but as actual friends we are even closer.”
Rep. Robert J. Menendez
“On behalf of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee I would like to congratulate Brian Stack for this tremendous accomplishment of becoming the longest serving Mayor in Union City history. As we have all seen many times, there is no one in our state who works harder than Brian Stack at both constituent services and engaging voters, both of which are part of our party’s bedrock values. I’m certain that those remarkable skills and Brian’s total dedication to his community will enable him to continue as a highly effective public servant for years to come.”
