The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) has endorsed James E. McGreevey for mayor of Jersey City in 2025, giving him the backing of the same union that became an early supporter of the current mayor, Steve Fulop, in his bid for the Democratic nomination for governor.

“Jim McGreevy’s extensive track record of public service and dedication to the betterment of the community aligns with the values upheld by the ATU,” said ATU International President John Costa. “Our members across Jersey City will be mobilizing to get Jim McGreevey elected as the next mayor of Jersey City.”

Costa recalled his time as the head of ATU Local 819 in Newark when he appealed to McGreevey, then the governor of New Jersey, to stop New Jersey Transit from shutting down a garage that would have cost his union over 200 jobs.

“His longstanding commitment to the working class makes him the ideal candidate to lead Jersey City towards a future that prioritizes the well-being of all of Jersey City’s residents,” Costa said.

Orlando Riley, the ATU New Jersey State Council chair, praised McGreevey’s support for working families.

“His campaign is about making the community better, from reliable public transit to affordable housing to good jobs, which will directly impact our members living and working in Jersey City.” Riley said.

Fulop is not seeking a fourth term. McGreevey faces Hudson County Commissioner Bill O’Dea and City Council President Joyce Watterman in the November 2025 non-partisan municipal election.

The ATU is the largest transit workers union in North America.
