Roselle Councilwoman-at-Large Denise Wilkerson has won the Democratic nomination for another term by three votes, defeating Cynthia Johnson by four votes, with no more ballots left to be counted in an election that is likely headed to a recount.
Wilkerson won, 1,496 to 1,493, 49.8% to 49.7%. Sixteen write-in votes were cast.
On Friday, the contest between Wilkerson and Johnson was tied at 1,472. On election night, Wilkerson led by sixteen votes, 1,444 to 1,460.
Johnson is the 3rd Ward councilwoman.
In the race for the 4th Ward council seat, incumbent Cindy Thomas defeated Marie Dupont by 21 votes, 311 to 290. She led by 24 votes on Friday and 26 votes on election night night.
Wilkerson and Thomas had the backing of Mayor Donald Shaw and three of their council colleagues: Isabel Sousa, Brandon Bernier, and Rosie McCamery. Johnson and Dupont were supported by Assemblyman Reginald Atkins, the Democratic municipal chairman, and Vice Chairman Jamel Holley, a former mayor and assemblyman.
