Roseland councilman resigns

Roger Freda resigned his seat on the Roseland Borough Council last night, setting up a contest among local Democrats to pick his interim replacement.

He cited a heavy work schedule at the Edison Water Utility, where he is a supervisor.

“I have enjoyed my time working with my friends on the council regarding many initiatives and projects,” said Freda.  “I have learned so much and will truly miss working with everyone, but I know that upon my departure, the Borough is in exceptional hands.”

Freda was up for re-election this year.  He was elected in 2018 on his second try – he lost by 43 votes in 2017 – on a ticket with Eileen Fishman, who won 49% in a 2003 special election for Essex County Freeholder.  Their election gave Democrats a majority on the borough council.

The Democratic county committee will have fifteen days to submit three names to the council; they may either pick one or send the selection back to the party organization.

“I’d like to thank Roger for his service and wish him and his family the best of luck in his future endeavors and career which seems to be skyrocketing,” said Mayor James Spango.  “All councilmembers of the Roseland governing body also made remarks wishing Councilman Freda the best and thanking him for his service to the Borough.”
