Gary Nash, a retired captain of the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, has announced that he will seek the Democratic nomination for sheriff in the June 4 primary election.
Nash wants to replace Armando Fontoura, who will retire in January after nearly 34 years in the post.
“Throughout my career, I have been committed to upholding the highest standards of law enforcement and ensuring the safety and security of our communities,” Nash said. “If elected, I will bring that same dedication and integrity to the role of Sheriff, working tirelessly to serve and protect the residents of Essex County.”
Nash will face Amir Jones, the undersheriff and a 12-year veteran of the Essex Sheriff’s department. Jones, the son of Essex Democratic Chair LeRoy Jones, has the backing of the Essex Democratic organization.
It’s unclear whether Nash will mount a full countywide campaign or if he’s there to give a ballot line to Bloomfield Mayor Ted Gamble.
“I believe that effective law enforcement requires collaboration and partnership between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve,” Nash explained. “As Sheriff, I will prioritize building trust and cooperation with residents, working together to address the challenges facing our county and ensure a safer future for all.”
