Republican re-elected Gloucester County Commissioner; two other races still close

GOP sheriff trails by 441 votes; Republican County Commissioner Chris Konawel up by 530

Republican Nicholas DeSilvio has won re-election to a second term as a Gloucester County Commissioner, but the second seat and the sheriff’s race are still too close to call.

Democrat Carmel Morina has increased his lead to 441 votes over Republican incumbent Jonathan Sammons in the race for sheriff.  Morina led on election night by 240 votes.

The other GOP county commissioner, Christopher Konawel, leads Democrat Tom Bianco by 530 votes, 77,925 to 76,496.   DeSilvio has 79,180 votes, and Democrat Don Heverly has 75,989.

There are still 3,405 uncounted provisional ballots in Gloucester County, which won’t be counted until after the last late-arriving vote-by-mail cutoff on Tuesday, November 12.  That’s one day later than usual because of Monday’s Veterans Day federal holiday.

The sheriff’s race is a rematch: Sammons unseated Morina in 2021.   Bianco is the mayor of Clayton and Heverly is a Monroe councilman and ironworkers union official.  DeSilvio sought the Republican nomination for State Senate in the 4th district in 2023.
