McGreevey has big fundraising edge in Jersey City mayoral race (Updated)

Former governor has raised nearly $2.2 million in bid to lead state’s second-largest city

James E. McGreevey has a huge cash advantage in his bid to become the next mayor of Jersey City, raising $2,176,361 so far with $986,381 cash-on-hand in advance of the November non-partisan municipal election.

McGreevey, the former governor, reported raising $199,219 during the first three months of this year.

Additionally, Team McGreevey, his joint account with city council candidates, reported raising $427,262 in the first quarter and $947,924 in total; that account has $944,138 cash-on-hand.

Jersey City Councilman James Solomon has raised $838,51 and had $613,892 remaining in his campaign account; he had a $219,629 haul during the first quarter of the year.  The Team Solomon account has $327,760 on hand.

Hudson County Commissioner William O’Dea, who was first elected to office in 1985 when he won a city council seat, has banked $628,177 after bringing in $103,720 in January, February, and March. O’Dea’s total fundraising is at $828.951.  An account of city council candidates allied with O’Dea has $167,886 cash-on-hand; they raised $222,282, including $106,407 in January, February, and March of this year.

Ali Mussab, a former president of the Jersey City Board of Education, raised $62,816 during the first quarter of 2025.  He has raised a total of $354,853 and has $190,791 cash-on-hand.  The Team Mussab has raised $9,200, all this year, and has $9,184 cash-

A fifth candidate, City Council President Joyce Watterman, has raised $281,045, including $35,627, for her mayoral bid.  She had $42,096 banked.

The three-term mayor, Steve Fulop, is not seeking re-election and is instead a candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor.
