Council President Susan McCartney leads the race for mayor of West Orange, with three other current or former members of the council not too far behind in the officially nonpartisan contest.

McCartney has 31% of the vote, ahead of Councilwoman Cindy Matute-Brown’s 26%, Councilman Bill Rutherford’s 23%, and former Councilman Joe Krakoviak’s 20%.

Mayor Robert Parisi did not seek re-election.

McCartney was the choice of many Essex County Democrats, among them State Sen. Richard Codey (D-Roseland), who has represented West Orange in the legislature for decades. Matute-Brown, meanwhile, had endorsements from more progressive figures like former Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck) and the New Jersey Working Families Party.

With both McCartney and Matute-Brown departing their council seats, four candidates competed for two open seats on the township council: Ron Charles, William Michael Barbee, Susan Scarpa, and Asmeret Ghebremicael.

Ghebremicael has a big lead with 34%, while Scarpa has 25%, Charles has 22%, and Barbee has 18%.
