Leroy Truth, a paid agitator whose real name is Leonard Filipowski, was arrested on Friday on charges of assaulting a police officer in Union City.
Truth was also charged with resisting arrest and obstruction.
Assistant Essex County Prosecutor Jennifer Ventola told Superior Court Judge Nadine Killebrew that the matter was being referred to a grand jury. The matter was transferred to Essex County.
After spending Friday night in jail, Truth was released on his own recognizance on Saturday.
His next court date is December 15. Truth was represented by a public defender.
In the meantime, Killebrew ordered Truth to have no contact with the Union City Board of Education or any of its employees.
Truth’s alleged ties to North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco led to the harassment of Union City Mayor/State Sen. Brian P. Stack and his family over the last year. Those incidents led to a vicious political feud in Hudson County, a fight that Stack has won.
Last month, a municipal court judge in Trenton dismissed disorderly persons offenses against Truth following his removal from a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing earlier this year.
