Judge allows Patel to remain on ballot in Edison

The Democratic primary for mayor of Edison will be a three-way race after a judge decided on Friday that Lav Patel can remain in the race.

Superior Court Judge Michael Toto on Friday rejected a bid to invalidate Patel’s petition after he had circulated and signed a petition for another candidate, Anajana Patel.   She wound up withdrawing from the race.

Election lawyer Raj Parikh filed a challenge citing significant irregularities and improper coordination between the two Patels.  The incumbent, Sam Joshi, claimed some voters were presented with fake petitions and misled over whose they were signing.

The municipal clerk, Chery Russomanno, who has ties to the anti-Joshi Democrats, denied the objection.

During a two-day hearing, Toto heard from three witnesses, including controversial school board member Jerry Shi, a member of the Edison Eight.   Toto found there was “no fraudulent intent.”
