Albio Sires has four weeks left as a congressman before he ends his stint in Washington and returns to his hometown of West New York to run for mayor, a job he held for eleven years before a House seat in 2006.
Sires could be facing a tough race. Cosmo Cirillo, a three-term town commissioner, will take on Sires; Felix Roque, who served as mayor from 2011 to 2019, says he’s considering entering the race.
On Monday evening, a group of top Hudson County political leaders appeared at a West New York Democratic County Committee — an organization controlled by the congressman — to create an early glimpse of what Sires’ support might look like.
Attendees included: State Sen. Brian Stack, the mayor of Union City; Hudson County Board of Commissioners Chairman and Hudson County Democratic Chairman Anthony Vainieri; Rep.-elect Robert J. Menendez; Craig Guy, the leading candidate to become the next Hudson County Executive; Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner; West New York Mayor Gabriel Rodriguez; Sheriff Frank Schillari; Hudson County Commissioner Caridad Rodriguez; North Bergen Mayor Julio Marenco; West New York Commissioners Victor Barrera and Yoleisy Yanez; and former Senate Majority Leader Bernard Kenney (D-Hoboken).
