Candidate’s uncle charged with stealing opponent’s lawn sign

Editor’s note: the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s office erroneously issued a press release today stating that Rajendra Joshi had been arrested.  He was not.  A spokesman for the prosecutor, Conner J.E. Ouellette, acknowledged the mistake but did not explain how an inaccurate public statement was distributed to the media.

The 71-year-old uncle of Edison Democratic mayoral candidate Sam Joshi was issued a summons for stealing a sign belonging to the Republican mayoral candidate, Keith Hahn.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone announced today that Rajendra Joshi had been charged with one count of disorderly personal theft by unlawful taking after an investigation into an October 21 incident.  Prosecutors say that the elder Joshi had removed a sign from a residence on Dolores Drive without the permission of the owner.

A video shows Edison Police removing Hahn’s signs from the trunk of Rajendra’s car.  Sam Joshi is seen in the video.
