Anthony Campos, the former Newark police chief locked in a runoff for the East Ward of the Newark City Council, unveiled a set of endorsements today from a variety of public safety groups and officials, including the Essex County Chiefs of Police Association, the Newark Police Superior Officers’ Association, the Newark Firefighters Union, former Newark Director of Public Safety Anthony Ambrose, and John Comparetto, the retired chief of the sheriff’s department.

“Improving public safety requires a deep understanding of not only the community, but also of the intricacies of the complex public agencies focused on law enforcement,” Ambrose said in a statement. “[Campos] is the best candidate in this race with the managerial experience and professional background to bring real progress towards improving public safety in the East Ward.”

Also backing Campos is the East Ward Coalition of Public Housing Leaders, which represents the residents of a number of different public housing projects.

In the initial May 10 election, Campos finished narrowly behind fellow retired police officer Mike Silva, who has the support of retiring Councilman Augusto Amador and a number of other Newark politicians. Campos previously ran for the East Ward in 2018, when he lost to Amador by a tiny 51-49% runoff margin.
