A trio of Bergen County Democrats won reelection Tuesday night, keeping the county firmly in Democratic hands.
Steven Tanelli and Tracy Silna Zur won reelection to the county commission, while Anthony Cureton secured another term as sheriff. The outcome was never really in question, as the typically blue Bergen County gave little room for movement in a presidential year.
Tanelli and Zur faced a young pair of GOP opponents: the combined age of 19-year-old Dave Plotkin and 21-year-old Michael Joseph is younger than either Tanelli or Zur. Both Tanelli and Zur joined the commission in 2013.
Cureton, meanwhile, took victory in a rematch with Saddle Brook Police Chief Robert Kugler. Kugler’s 2021 campaign was derailed by an indictment that was later dismissed, but this year he didn’t have the coattails of Jack Ciattarelli to ride to a competitive race.
Joseph, who has far-right ties the Bergen GOP has ignored, was recently sworn in as a rent control board representative in New Brunswick. Notably, New Brunswick is not in Bergen County, and a Joseph victory could have led to a sticky residency dispute.
