Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small, Sr. and his wife have been charged with physically and emotionally abusing their teenage daughter, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office announced today.
According to the county’s Special Victims Unit, Marty Small and his wife La’Quetta Small – the superintendent of the Atlantic City school district – both repeatedly harmed their 15-/16-year-old daughter in December of last year and January of this year.
“During one incident, Marty Small, Sr. is alleged to have hit his daughter multiple times in the head with a broom causing her to lose consciousness,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement. “Another incident alleged that Marty Small, Sr., during an argument with his daughter, continuously threatened to hurt her by ‘earth slamming’ her down the stairs, grabbing her head and throwing her to the ground, and smacking the weave out of her head. Another incident involved Marty Small, Sr. punching his daughter repeatedly in her legs causing bruising.”
Marty Small is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, terroristic threats, aggravated assault, and simple assault. La’Quetta Small has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child and three counts of simple assault.
Small, a Democrat, first rose to the Atlantic City mayoralty in 2019 after his predecessor, Frank Gilliam, pleaded guilty to wire fraud and resigned.
