Valerie Vainieri Huttle has picked up the endorsement of the former owner of the largest daily newspaper in her district in her bid for the Democratic State Senate nomination in the 37th district.
Jennifer Borg, a former corporate officer and general counsel of The (Bergen) Record before her family sold the newspaper to Gannett, was one of 21 women lawyers to sign a letter backing Vainieri Huttle for the open Senate seat.
“Vainieri Huttle has committed herself to serving the public interest and to fighting for the rights of vulnerable and marginalized members of society,” the group of attorneys said. “Vainieri Huttle has a proven record of commitment to women’s issues in the State legislature.”
Among the women lawyers supporting Vainieri Huttle are former Superior Court Judge Ronny Jo Siegal, Oradell Mayor Dianne Camelo Didio, New Milford Councilwoman Hedy Grant, former Deputy Attorney General, Kim Ringler and Marcia Kuttner Werner. In the 1980s, Werner represented the Ridgewood Kiwanis Club in a legal battle over the national organization’s refusal to allow them to admit women members.
Vainieri Huttle and Gordon Johnson, the two current State Assembly members for the district, are vying for the seat of Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg. Weinberg announced last month that she would not seek re-election.
After 86 years of family ownership, Borg and her family sold the newspaper to Gannett in 2016.
Since then, the newspaper has seen a 71% drop in print edition newspaper circulation.
Borg’s law form still represents the Bergen Record on some matters.
