Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter (D-Paterson) was elected chair of the Legislative Black Caucus Thursday, replacing longtime chair State Sen. Ron Rice (D-Newark).
State Sen. Troy Singleton (D-Palmyra) and Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson (D-Trenton) will serve as vice chairs, the position Sumter held before Thursday’s vote.
Rice, who endorsed the change, will serve as an advisor to Sumter, whose election was first reported by InsiderNJ.
Sumter will become the first woman to chair the caucus once the positions are assumed on April 6.
