More than 130 women leaders have signed on to a letter pledging to help Bibi Taylor win the Democratic nomination for State Assembly in the 21st district, a move that comes with promises of fundraising support to flip a longtime Republican seat.

“Bibi Taylor has demonstrated by word and deed that she is ready, willing, and able to serve the interests and meet the needs of the residents of the district,” the letter said.

Taylor and attorney Scott Salmon won a non-binding straw poll in Summit last week held after county committee members heard from most of the candidates seeking the two Assembly seats.

Seven Democrats are seeking the chance to take on Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz (R-Summit) and whomever Republicans pick for the open seat of Jon Bramnick (R-Westfield).

Bramnick is giving up his Assembly seat to run for the Senate seat Tom Kean, Jr, is giving up this year.

In addition to Taylor and Salmon, Cranford Mayor Patrick Giblin, Bernards Democratic Municipal Chair Elizabeth Graner, National Organization of Women (NOW) New Jersey president  and Mountainside Democratic Municipal Chair Anjali Mehrotra, former director of the state Division of Women Ileana Montes; and former legislative intern Harrison Clewell are seeking the seat.

The Somerset County Democratic screening committee has recommended Salmon and Graner to the convention that will award the organization line.

Joyce Wilson Harley, who organized the endorsements, says about 30% of the signatories live in the 21st district.

Taylor, the Union County finance director, served as town administrator in Dover and later as director of administration and finance and city administrator in Plainfield.  From 2014 to 2018. Taylor was the First Lady of East Orange while her husband, Lester Taylor III, served as mayor.  Lester Taylor did not seek re-election in 2017 and has since moved to Watchung.

“Bibi Taylor is smart, hardworking, and honest. She listens and learns. She is not only the consummate leader but is an equally intelligent follower,” her supporters stated. “She is approachable and affable. Her management style has won her accolades from those who have had the pleasure off working with her.”
