Newark West Ward Democratic municipal chairman Chigozie Onyema was the top vote-getter in the race for State Assembly in the 28th district, an outcome that could mean the end of the road for first-term Assemblywoman Garnet Hall (D-Maplewood).
Onyema received 141 votes at the Essex County Democratic convention today, with nine-term incumbent Cleopatra Tucker (D-Newark) finishing second with 120 votes. Hall received 64 votes.
That means Onyema and Tucker will run with the endorsement of the Essex County Democratic organization and may use their slogan on the primary ballot.
There is considerable speculation that Hall, who won an Assembly seat two years ago when Mila Jasey (D-South Orange) retired, will not seek re-election to a second term.
Onyema and Hall won the Union County Democratic screening committee endorsement earlier this week, giving them he organization slogan in Hillside.
