Muniz resigns Horizon board seat

By David Wildstein, December 06 2022 3:01 pm

Joseph Muniz, a top political operative and close ally of North Bergen Mayor and State Sen. Nicholas Sacco, has resigned his seat on the board of directors of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.

Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin had asked Muniz to step down after indicating that he would not reappoint him to the $83,200 -per-year board seat.

Muniz had been named to the post by then-Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto in 2017.  Coughlin had kept Muniz on as a holdover for the last two years even though Muniz had played a key role in Prieto’s bid for another term as Speaker.

Coughlin has not yet announced who he will pick to replace Muniz.

Under new legislation that reconstitutes the HBCBS board, Coughlin and Senate President Nicholas Scutari will each get two appointments to the board.
