Mazzeo, Polistina will meet for Senate Debate on Sunday at 9 PM

Democrat Vince Mazzeo and Republican Vince Polistina, the candidates for New Jersey State Senate in the Atlantic County-based 2nd district, will face off in a debate at 9 PM on Sunday night sponsored by the New Jersey Globe.

The debate is sponsored by the New Jersey Globe.  David Wildstein, the editor of the New Jersey Globe will moderate the debate, along with Micah Rasmussen, the director of the Rebovich Institute of New Jersey Politics at Rider University.

Polistina will become a senator in November regardless of the outcome of the general election.  He has previously won a special election convention for Senate  for fill Brown’s Senate term and will serve until at least January

Mazzeo is a four-term assemblyman from Northfield.  He’s looking to flip the seat for the Democrats, who held the seat for ten years before Democrat James Whelan died and Republican Christopher Brown flipped the seat in 2017.

Polistina served in the State Assembly from 2007 to 2011, when he gave up his seat to take on Whelan. He lost by a 53%-47% margin.

The seat was held by Brown from January 2018 until last summer when he resigned to take a job at the Department of Community Affairs working on the state takeover of Atlantic CIty.  He had announced his intention not to seek re-election earlier this year.

The 2nd legislative district has been held by four Democrats and four Republicans to the Senate over the last 50 years.  It may be the most historically swing legislative district in the State.

Assemblyman John Armato (D-Buena) is seeking his third term on a ticket with Atlantic County Commissioner Caren Fitzpatrick.  The face two Republicans: former Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian and Claire Swift, a former deputy state attorney general.

The district incudes the Atlantic County municipalities of Absecon City, Atlantic City, Brigantine City, Buena Borough, Buena Vista Township Egg Harbor City, Egg Harbor Township, Folsom Borough, Hamilton Township, Linwood City, Longport Borough, Margate City, Mullica Township, Northfield City, Pleasantville City, Somers Point City and Ventnor City.

The candidates for State Senate in the 8th district — State Sen. Dawn Addiego (D-Evesham) and Assemblywoman Jeanne Stanfield (R-Westampton), will face each other in a New Jersey Globe debate
