Senate President Nicholas Scutari has tapped Joseph Lagana (D-Paramus), a Bergen County Democrat, to chair the Senate Labor Committee.
He replaces Fred Madden, who left office yesterday after 20 years in the Senate and 15 years as the Labor Committee chairman.
“I’ve learned a lot watching Fred Madden run the committee,” said Lagana, who served as the panel’s vice chairman in recent years. “I’m excited about the new position.”
Lagana said he plans to work closely with labor unions and business leaders in his new role.
“I’m looking forward to working with employees and employers to find sound and equitable policies for the people of New Jersey,” Lagana said.
He also said that working on issues related to artificial intelligence will be a legislative priority in the coming years and wants to pay close attention to how new technologies will affect the state’s labor market.
A former Paramus councilman, Lagana was elected to the Assembly in 2013 and moved up to the Senate in 2018 after Bob Gordon (D-Fair Lawn) resigned to join the Board of Public Utilities.
