Haider, Park win crowded Dem Assembly primary in Bergen’s LD-37

The incumbents defeated a quartet of challengers

In Bergen County’s 37th legislative district, a pair of incumbent assemblywomen won the Democratic nominations in a crowded field.

Assemblywomen Shama Haider (D-Tenafly) and Ellen Park (D-Englewood Cliffs) had the endorsement of the county organization, and the pair faced a challenge from candidates backed by Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop: Tamar Warburg, a Jewish community leader from Teaneck, and Tenafly Councilman Dan Park (no relation to the assemblywoman). A third wild card slate consisted of former Teaneck Councilman Yitz Stern and small business owner Rosemary Hernandez Carroll, who survived a petition challenge.

Former Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg, who represented the district in Trenton for three decades, endorsed Haider and Park in March.

The 37th’s primary was among the state’s highest-profile, least-predictable races going into Election Day.

Republicans are running Andrew Meehan, an independent candidate for county commissioner last year, and EMT Marco Navarro in Bergen County’s bluest district.
