Firefighters back Democrats in key legislative races

The state’s largest firefighters union is backing mostly Democrats in competitive legislative races across the state,  but is supporting State Sen. Vince Polistina (R-Egg Harbor Township) and two incumbent GOP Assembly members in the Atlantic County-based 2nd district.

The New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association’s 2023 endorsements included Democratic slates in the 3rd, 4th, 11th and 16th districts.    Endorsements also went to Democrats in the 14th and 38th; in the 8th district, the union is backing only Assemblyman Brandon Umba (R-Medford).

In addition to the 2nd district, the firefighters endorsed Republican Carmen Amato, the mayor of Berkeley, for the open 9th district State Senate seat, along with GOP candidates in the 25th, 26th, 39th, and 40th districts.

“Our union does not take our endorsement process lightly, and it is something candidates should only accept if they understand the responsibility behind it,” said NJFMBA President Eddie Donnelly.  “These elections are going to bring turnover in the New Jersey Legislature that has been unprecedented in three decades, and we will hold every candidate we endorse to their commitment to always be willing to hear the concerns of the men and women we represent.”

Donnelly said that endorsements were unanimous.
