Calls for a hearing on New Jersey Transit’s recent ills are intensifying as Assembly Minority Conference Leader Christopher DePhillips joins the chorus asking for answers.
Recent delays on the River Line between Trenton and Camden spurred the call for a bicameral hearing from DePhillips, who serves on the Assembly Transportation Committee. The Republican leader joins Senate Majority Whip Troy Singleton and three Monmouth County Republican legislators in the calls for a hearing.
“Delays and cancellations seem to be the only thing riders can count on with NJ Transit,” DePhillips said in a release. “I’m impatient with the same old excuses year after year. We can all see it is not a money problem, but a leadership problem.”
DePhillips opposed a 15% fare hike and a 2.5% corporate tax to help fund the transit agency, and he has also asked for a review of the agency’s finances to identify potential spending waste.
“Colleagues on both sides of the aisle need to come together to get answers and create solutions that keep public transportation affordable, make New Jersey attractive to businesses and talent, and foster a thriving economy,” DePhillips said. “NJ Transit can be a part of that. We need leaders in there who share that vision.”
