The Communications Workers of America today endorsed two Democrats and two Republicans for State Senate seats in South Jersey Senate, but also skipped past two other longtime Democratic senators from Camden County.
Endorsements of the politically powerful union went to Democrats John Burzichelli (D-Paulsboro) in the 3rd and Paul Moriarty (D-Washington Township) in the 4th.
Burzichelli, who lost his Assembly seat in 2021 after 20 years in the legislature, is seeking to unseat freshman State Sen. Ed Durr (R-Logan). Moriarty, a nine-term assemblyman, is seeking an open Senate seat in a swing district against Republican Christopher Del Borrello, a former Washington Township councilman.
The CWA endorsement in the 2nd went to State Sen. Vince Polistina (R-Egg Harbor Township).
Former Burlington County Freeholder Latham Tiver, a business agent at Operating Engineers Local 725 and the Republican Senate candidate in the 8th, also nabbed the CWA’s support. He faces Democrat Heather Taylor, an Evesham councilwoman seeing an open GOP seat
State Sens. Nilsa Cruz-Perez (D-Barrington) and Jim Beach (D-Voorhees), did not get CWA endorsements. Beach is also the Camden County Democratic chairman; neither did State Sen. Troy Singleton (D-Delran). All three have safe seats.
“Now more than ever, New Jersey needs pro-union leaders in Trenton who will fight alongside us on the issues that matter to middle-class and working families,” said CWA NJ state director Fran Ehret. “Over the next several months, CWA members look forward to being out there in force – knocking on doors, making phone calls, and talking with our neighbors – all the way through the last hour of Election Day this November.”
The CWA made no Assembly endorsements in South Jersey, except for Majority Whip Carol Murphy (D-Mount Laurel), who is in the safely Democratic 7th district.
A previous announcement listed endorsements for Democratic State Sen. Vin Gopal (D-Long Branch) and his running mates, Luanne Peterpaul and Margie Donlon. Peterpaul and Donlon face incumbents Marilyn Piperno (R-Colts Neck) and Kim Eulner (R-Shrewsbury).
Four Democratic incumbents don’t have CWA endorsements: Richard Codey (D-Roseland), Renee Burgess (D-Irvington), Teresa Ruiz (D-Newark), and Brian P. Stack (D-Union City).
“Everyone deserves the opportunity to work in a safe, respectful environment with fair wages and benefits,” said Dennis Trainor, Vice President for CWA District 1. “We are extremely proud to back these Assembly and Senate candidates, because we know they’ll be steadfast, strong supporters of working families and the labor movement here in New Jersey.”
