State Sen. Jon Bramnick (R-Westfield) is calling on Attorney General Jennifer Davenport to create a statewide task force to help local police departments enforce New Jersey’s new electric-bike laws.
Bramnick said the growing number of e-bikes on streets, sidewalks and bicycle paths has created enforcement and public safety challenges that would benefit from greater coordination among state and local law enforcement agencies.
“E-bikes are here to stay, but that does not mean we should ignore the serious safety concerns that come with their increased use,” Bramnick said. “Too many serious injuries have occurred in e-bike accidents. We need to make sure our laws are not simply on the books – they need to be understood and enforced.”
Bramnick, a former Assembly minority leader who represents parts of Middlesex, Morris, Somerset and Union counties, wants the Attorney General’s Office to establish an E-Bike Task Force that could provide local departments with guidance and resources for enforcing the new rules.
“Local police departments should not have to navigate these challenges on their own,” Bramnick said. “A statewide task force can give them the tools and coordination they need to protect pedestrians, motorists, and e-bike riders alike.”
Bramnick said his proposal focuses on enforcement rather than restricting e-bike use.
“We have established rules for a reason,” he said. “When violations put people at risk, there must be meaningful enforcement. The Attorney General can play an important role in bringing our law enforcement agencies together and making sure New Jersey is taking this issue seriously.”
Bramnick is asking Davenport to use the Attorney General’s statewide law enforcement authority to organize the effort.
