Bayonne Councilwoman Jacqueline Weimmer will seek the Democratic nomination for State Assembly in the 31st district, teaming up with incumbent Barbara McCann Stamato (D-Jersey City) in the Democratic primary.

The two will run with the support of gubernatorial candidate Steve Fulop, the three-term mayor of Jersey City.

The Hudson County Democratic organization is backing Assemblyman William Sampson (D-Bayonne) and Hudson County Commissioner Jerry Walker in the 31st district.

“We know that policies directly impact the people of New Jersey every day, which is why we are running a policy-driven campaign,” said Fulop.  “Barbara and Jackie bring the leadership, empathy, and relentless determination to transform people’s lives. It’s time for government to serve the people, not the political machine.”

McCann Stamato, the Jersey City Democratic municipal chair, was elected in 2023.  Weimmer was elected to represent the 2nd Ward on the Bayonne City Council in 2022 on Mayor Jimmy Davis’ slate.  Davis is expected to run for Hudson County sheriff on a slate supported by the HCDO; Team Fulop is supporting incumbent Frank Schillari.

Nearly six in ten registered Democrats in the 31st district (59%) live in Jersey City, with Bayonne representing 28% and Kearny with 13%.

Sampson went to the Assembly four years ago after Davis dumped Majority Whip Nicholas Chiaravalloti (D-Bayonne), a pick ratified by the HCDO under a longtime agreement that the mayor of Bayonne gets to select one of the Assembly seats.
