Trump loyalist begins tenure as interim federal prosecutor

John Giordano, a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, was sworn in tonight as acting U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, replacing Vikas Khanna as the state’s top federal law enforcement official.

Giordano will start work tomorrow and can hold the post on an interim basis for a maximum of 120 days.

The 47-year-old Philadelphia lawyer – and Burlington County native – worked on Trump’s transition team and has close ties to the White House.  He is not necessarily a candidate for nomination for a full term, but that could change.

Trump’s initial pick was State Sen. Douglas Steinhardt (R-Lopatcong), who wound up turning the job down.

For Giordano, a former assistant U.S. Attorney, to keep the post beyond July 1, 2025, he would either have to be nominated by Trump and confirmed by the U.S. Senate or selected by a majority of U.S. District Court Judges in New Jersey.

The New Jersey Globe exclusively reported him as a leading candidate for the U.S. Attorney post on Sunday.

Khanna became acting U.S. Attorney on December 8 following the resignation of Philip Sellinger.
