Amalia Duarte on the Quraishi decision

By Joey Fox, March 29 2024 5:05 pm

Morris County Democratic Chair Amalia Duarte released the following statement today after U.S. District Court Judge Zahid Quraishi granted a preliminary injunction that ends the organization line for the 2024 primary election and mandates office-block voting:

“Today is a good day for democracy! This decision follows on the heels of Morris County holding the most open and transparent endorsement process of any county committee in the state. We invited all candidates to address our convention. Then, we held a secret vote and abided by the choice of the nearly 600 county committee members, elected officials, municipal chairs, caucus leaders, executive board, and state committee members.

Fairness is essential to democracy, and ending the line levels the playing field. It will create opportunities for more diverse candidates and those without connections to run for office. This will lead to a fairer and more democratic political system in NJ.”
