Donald M. Payne, Jr, a six-term congressman who died on April 24 at age 65, will lie in state in the Essex County Historic Courthouse in Newark today, followed by funeral services at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, also in Newark, tomorrow.
Following a private viewing on May 1, the public may pay its respects to Payne from noon to midnight.
The funeral service will be held at 10 AM on May 2.
Last Gov. Phil Murphy ordered flags to be flown at half staff on Wednesday and Thursday in honor of Payne.
Payne is the third person to lie in state at the Essex courthouse, following his father, Donald M. Payne, Sr., a 12-term congressman, in 2012, and Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver in 2023.
In lieu of flowers, the Payne family has asked that donations be made to the Donald M. Payne, Sr. Foundation, 111 Mulberry Street, Unit 5C, Newark, NJ 07102.
The public may enter and exit through the west entrance of the courthouse on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
