Gov. Phil Murphy today ordered U.S. and New Jersey flags will fly at half-staff on Friday in honor of Chuck Hardwick, a former Assembly Speaker who died on February 19 at age 83.

“Speaker Hardwick was a dedicated public servant and a significant force across our state. We honor his legacy of compassion, philanthropy, and service and extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones,” said Murphy.  “We remain forever grateful for his contributions to the people of New Jersey.”

Hardwick represented Union County in the legislature from 1978 until 1992, serving as minority leader from 1985 to 1986 and Speaker from 1986 to 1990.  He sought the Republican nomination for governor in 1989.

A visitation for Hardwick will be held at Gray’s Funeral Home in Cranford at 10:30 AM on Friday, followed by a graveside service at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
