The Toms River Regular Republican Club, which has the greatest number of votes at the Ocean County Republican convention, endorsed favorite son Joseph Vicari for Governor.
Vicari, an Ocean County Commissioner for the last 40 years, won by an acclamation of sorts with no formal vote being taken. There were supporters of Jack Ciattarelli in the room that likely included Assemblyman Greg McGuckin (R-Toms River).
The vote can be viewed as a signal that former Ocean County Republican Chairman George Gilmore, who received a full presidential pardon in the final hours of Donald Trump’s term, is launching a bid to regain his old job.
The club president, Geri Ambrosio, is a strong Gilmore ally.
Vicari, the state’s longest-serving county official, entered the race last weekend following the exit of Gilmore’s expected first choice, former GOP State Chairman Doug Steinhardt. He told the New Jersey Globe that he does not plan to mount a statewide campaign and wants to advocate for the Jersey Shore.
