Rullo says N.J. should ditch driver licenses for undocumented residents

State fails to meet deadline for implementation

Now that the New Jersey Motor Vehicles Commission failed to meet a January deadline to issue driver licenses to residents without regard to immigration status, Republican gubernatorial candidate Joseph Rudy Rullo wants the state to scrap the plan altogether.

“State officials and state employees should not violate federal immigration laws with failed Murphy illegal drivers’ licenses,” Rullo said in a statement issued on Tuesday evening.  “I call on all of my opponents in Governor race to join me with all our GOP legislatures and leaders.”

The MVC chief administrator, Sue Fulton, blamed the coronavirus pandemic for the indefinite delays.  Gov. Phil Murphy said he hopes to be ready by the spring.

“You must have either a valid social security card or a valid social security denial letter based on legal status, to create a license number or valid non-drivers ID card,” Rullo said.”

Republican legislators opposed the legislation signed by Murphy in December 2019 allows undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver license called for implementation in January 2021.

Rullo maintains that all drivers must show legal immigration status and be verified through the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system.

“This most likely is why Murphy’s quick scheme to give out illegal alien drivers licenses after January 1, 2021 is dead in the water,” alleged Rullo.

Rullo, a former volunteer firefighter and EMT on two squads who works as a commercial and theatrical television and movie actor, is making his second bid for governor.  He finished fourth in a field of five candidates in the 2017 Republican primary.

He has since amassed nearly 392,000 followers on Facebook and runs a social media marketing company.
