Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ras Baraka today launched a new campaign video touting his accomplishments during a decade as mayor of Newark. The video promises to “build a broad-based coalition of families across our great state” and create a state “where the promise of democracy has a chance to reach us all.”
The 140-second video, narrated by Baraka, discusses reducing violent crime in Newark, challenging the wealth gap, expanding affordable high-speed internet access, reforming the city’s police department, and attracting more than 1,000 new businesses.
In “Reimagine,” Baraka proposes “a future more certain and more just than our past, rejecting the divisions of the present and build a state for all of us that protects us all.”
“We fight harder for equity. We fight harder for justice. We can’t sit by and watch other people beaten and oppressed when we know what it feels like,” Baraka said. “That means women’s health care decisions, educating children, not jailing them. An economy that doesn’t burden working families to make it easier for the wealthiest in our state, we can create a brighter economic and educational future.”
As governor, Baraka promises to “make corporations pay their fair share, to help shoulder the burden of the high expenses in this state, to pay more than what working families must pay.”
“ They want us to believe all of our problems are so different, but if you can’t pay your rent on Court Street, the outcome is the same as if you can’t pay your mortgage in South Orange.”
